If you are fond of keeping birds as pets, you would have to go in for a proper cage.
A cage is an enclosure that provides due protection to the pets from its predators.

A cage should have the following important features: -

a. It should be spacious and let the birds more around freely and even fly a bit.

b. It should neither become too hot or too cold with the temperature.

c. It should be kept totally clean and hygienic.

d. It should protect the birds from its enemies.

e. It should have some greenery inside, if possible.

f. It should give a ‘natural surroundings’ look inside.

g. It should have breeding nests inside.

h. It should protect the birds from direct sunlight and rain.

i. If possible it should have some clean earth at the base.

j. It should not have any sharp wires or similar injurious objects inside.

You have to select a cage depending on the following factors: -

1. Size of the pet bird.

2. Nature of the pet.

3. Number of birds to be sheltered in the same cage.

4. Material used for the cage.

5. Your budget for the cage.

6. The period you require the cage for.

7. The climate in your area.

Many people and religions are against caging a bird to be kept as a pet. The pros and cons are many and the debate goes on.

Some still feel and have proved that birds survive longer in cages as they are totally protected from predators. They also say that they breed better in captivity as all suitable arrangements can be created up to exact levels.

Even if you do not want to cage a bird for pet, you can have flightless birds as pets.
But please remember never to clip off the wings of a bird for your own pleasure.
Neither try to keep any endangered or restricted bird as a pet. It is an offence.

You can still share your love with them by feeding them in open grounds and helping them in times of injury and need.

 An aquarium is something I have always been fond of and believe many of you are aquarium fans too, as you are reading this post of mine. It is a very good and neat way to fulfill a hobby and keep pets in a non-messy way.An aquarium can seem to be difficult to maintain when you first purchase it, but slowly you get too used to taking care of it and the fish inside, in a very proper way. 

An aquarium can be of various shapes like a spherical bowl, square, rectangle, and various other shapes. It can also be of various sizes according to the space available, and likings. But an advise, never get a very small one where the fish would find difficult to swim easily. Also avoid keeping aggressive and slow fish breeds in the same tank.

Do consult a friend already into the hobby, rather than blindly trust the storeowner, for the right choice in buying fish, its food, medicine and the aquarium.

In the beginning start with a few fish, to get fully trained and add on later.

I am listing underneath, a list of important tips on aquarium: -

1.         Neither buy a tiny aquarium, nor a huge one.

2.        De-chlorinate the water before adding fish.

3.         Bring the temperature of the fish bag to the same as of the aquarium water, before finally transferring the fish.

4.        Choose the right fish very carefully and not in a hurry or blind recommendations.

5.        Do not add tortoise and fish in the same aquarium, they might not peacefully accommodate together.

6.        Regularly clean the aquarium walls of all algae or keep some algae-eating fish.

7.        Maintain a constant ‘aquarium water temperature’ of around 30 degrees with the help of heaters and chillers.

8.        Sudden temperature changes can be fatal for the fish

9.        Separate any infected or diseased fish from the rest.

10.      Do not install toys unnecessarily in the aquarium. They may look nice but restrict fish movement.

11.      Never put your aquarium in total darkness or under direct sunlight.

12.      Spend some time daily with your fish. It makes them healthy and happy.

13.      Protect your fish from loud cracker explosions.

14.      Always supply clean air to the aquarium through a good quality air pump.

15.      Feed the fish daily and in small quantities. They can die on over-feeding faster than by hunger.

16.      Install a good quality aquarium water filter to keep the water sparkling clean.

17.      Clean the water filter once every week.

18.      Also, periodically change some old water with new one.

After you have made up you mind to keep a pet, go in for the details on how to choose a pet that suits you and your family. There are various options like cats, dogs, rabbit, parrot, lovebirds, fish, etc. My other articles would discuss them in detail.

Your choice depends on the likings of you family and you. Large homes can have large breed dogs good for security purpose too. But mind you, they are difficult to manage, have good diets, need long walks, and are expensive on all fronts.

The smaller dogs can be good with small kids at home and small homes. They are inexpensive to keep and need less exercise or attention. They usually do not serve the purpose of security. But they give you a cute company, very much like your little child.

Fish aquariums are excellent for aesthetical usage and people loving peace, as there are no noise problems, like barking. They are good for homes with asthmatic patients who cannot keep hair-shedding pets.

Cats can be good for people who need low maintenance pets. They do not need to be bathed and need very little care. They should not ever be leashed.

Rabbits are very delicate options and die immediately on crude handling. Their urine is acidic and can ruin your floors. They cannot be chained. They do not make sound and you get noise free environment. They are virtually free to maintain as they feed on leftover foods and vegetable peels. They consume very little water and die on being bathed.

Parrots and birds are easy to keep due to negligible ‘excretes’. Children love parrots that try to imitate others. They are to be caged and therefore not kept as pets by many people.
